Salt, so that You can Drink Water

Writer: Evelyn M. SwenoEvelyn M. Sweno

[This post covers how your body requires certain minerals for your cells to actually be able to absorb the water you drink, and what happens when you aren’t absorbing water. YT video link at the end]

Our nervous systems control all of our bodily functions, it transmits electrical signals throughout the body and uses water to do that. When you’re dehydrated these signals have a harder time being sent, causing varying levels of dizziness, fatigue, headaches, and “brain fog” or cognitive impairment. The direct lack of water in our brains also changes which hormones are being produced, less serotonin for regulating mood and more cortisol which causes stress.

If we’re supposed to be 60% water, and we aren't- then all the normal functions of our body are being slowed down. We become cranky and tired more often, lack deep sleep and the ability to stay focused for a long time.

So then you drink some water… but it hardly helps and you just have to use the bathroom right away. What’s the deal?

Our cells act like little pumps, regulating the levels of sodium and potassium in them that’s required for absorbing water. And our greatest sources of sodium and potassium are organic fruits, veggies, and salt. However regular table salt is crystallized sodium and chloride, which together are very harsh and upset that little balance in our cells. Regular table salt slowly makes us unable to absorb water because it’s stripping away the potassium in our bodies (especially if it’s iodized table salt) and that makes us unable to absorb the water that we drink.

The water you try to chug is just “going right through” your body, and because you’re not absorbing it, it even ends up flushing more minerals out.

So what salt should we use instead? What has a better balance of minerals?

Celtic sea salt's most dominant minerals are magnesium chloride, magnesium bromide, and magnesium sulfate. When you put a couple grains of this moist salt on your tongue and let it dissolve before taking a drink, the absorbed magnesium pulls water into your cells- it’s the fastest way to hydrate your body. (BUT putting salt into your water to absorb it while drinking doesn’t work as well. Your body doesn’t have a chance to directly absorb the magnesium- it just gets diluted.)

Celtic sea salt allows us to absorb the water we’re drinking, improves flavor rather than harshly wearing out our tongues like table salt does, and even helps regulate blood sugar.

I don’t have a problem with not drinking enough water, in fact there are times when I drink too much. Once my mom learned about Celtic salt we all tried it. She started sleeping deeper because she wasn’t dehydrated anymore, I no longer had to use the bathroom constantly and my mental energy improved a lot, we also both lost our bread and sugar cravings (not entirely sure how that happened, but it did!) Soon after when my brothers and I took a trip to our grandparents house, where there was no Celtic salt to take before getting a drink, we all came home desperately thirsty despite having been enjoying frequent cups of juice and soda.
