When an organic, high carbon material like untreated wood or coconut shell is burned in a clean environment it oxidizes, parts of the surface are destroyed and the chemical rearrange creates a very porous surface on the carbon molecules. Charcoal molecules have the most surface area out of anything in the world, and because of that anything can bond to it through a process called adsorption. This is why activated charcoal is used medically to draw bacteria, toxins, and poisons out of a body. It’s very safe to eat and use externally, our ancestors used it to relieve bee and wasp stings, insect and spider bites, and even snake bites!
Air and water purification:
Charcoal air filters pull smoke, odor and pollutants out of the air that directly passes over them. Nuclear power plants use crates of activated charcoal to trap and remove radioactive material before it goes up the flue and into the atmosphere, and in the 1800s hospitals used platefulls of charcoal in rooms with grossly injured patients to remove odor and improve the air quality. Activated charcoal fabric and powder is used in respirator masks for workers who deal with gasses and airborne paint.
Poison dilutant and absorption:
Because of carbon’s base PH level it neutralizes poisons as they are absorbed. If someone swallowed toxic cleaning supplies a hospital would give the options of having their stomach pumped or taking activated charcoal!
Tooth whitening and dental hygiene:
Before commercial toothpaste was a thing, people used salt, powdered clay, or charcoal to clean their teeth when needed. Nowadays it’s added as a natural whitening agent in toothpaste. Activated charcoal powder can be used for infected and swollen gums and drawing bacteria out of saliva.
Stomach ache and digestive relief:
Capsulized charcoal is sold for relieving stomach aches and diarrhea and detoxing the body from heavy metals, microplastics, food pesticides, and helps with reactions from mold exposure. It absorbs the bacteria or toxins in your stomach and holds onto it as it passes through your body so that you don't have to fight it anymore. However if you aren’t drinking enough water when you take activated charcoal internally, it may cause constipation because of all the water it absorbs from your gut. Don’t take it at the same time as you take other supplements or medication because it can adsorb those before your body gets too!
